Dr. Scott Crouter is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sports Studies at The University of Tennessee Knoxville. Dr. Crouter is the Director for the Applied Physiology Laboratory and the Physical Activity Assessment Laboratory. Dr. Crouter’s main research interests are in the area of measuring physical activity and energy expenditure in adults and youth using wearable physical activity monitors that have various sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes. This work has led to over 100 peer-reviewed publications and is primarily funded by NIH and has received approximately 10 million dollars in funding as principle or co-investigator on grants.


Dr. Crouter is a Fellow on the National Academy of Kinesiology and the American College of Sports Medicine. He is the local chair for hosting the 10th International Conference on Ambulatory Monitoring of Physical Activity and Movement in Knoxville, TN to be held in June 2026. He serves as an associate editor for Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise and the Journal for the Measurement of Physical Behaviors and serves on grant review panels for the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Crouter has served on committees within the National Physical Activity Plan Alliance (U.S. report card for children and adolescents advisory committee), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (development of a youth compendium of physical activities), and the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (dietary reference intakes for energy committee).
